Empathy in Audit: Standard Chartered Bank CEO Urges Bank Audit Executives to Exercise Empathy
The Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Ltd, Dalu Ajene, has emphasized the importance of empathy in the role of bank audit executives. Speaking at the 58th quarterly general meeting of the Association of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria, Ajene highlighted the theme of ‘Being a Human Auditor in a Challenging Environment.’
In his keynote address, Ajene stressed the need for auditors to not only possess technical proficiency and ethical standards but also to understand the human aspects of their work. He emphasized the impact of their decisions on the lives and livelihoods of individuals and the trust placed in them by stakeholders.
The Chairman of ACAEBIN, Prince Akamadu, echoed Ajene’s sentiments, stating that being a human auditor involves balancing the demands of the profession with empathy, ethical judgment, and a commitment to the greater good. The meeting provided an opportunity for members to reflect on how they can continue to be effective auditors while maintaining their humanity.
Saheed Bashiru, the Director Of Internal Audit Practice at PwC, also shared insights on how auditors can identify and respond to emerging risks in a challenging environment. He emphasized the importance of building awareness of emerging risks, documenting processes, and effectively responding, monitoring, and reporting risks.
Overall, the meeting highlighted the evolving role of auditors in a rapidly changing environment and the importance of empathy, ethical responsibility, and human connection in carrying out their duties. It underscored the need for auditors to not only focus on technicalities and regulations but also on fostering trust and understanding in their interactions with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
