Importance of Education for Development and Growth: Chancellor of SWU

The Chancellor of Southwestern University (SWU) in Ogun State, Babatunde Odufuwa, emphasized the importance of education as a key driver of development and growth in Nigeria. Speaking at the university’s second convocation ceremony, Odufuwa highlighted the significance of sound human capital for the country’s future progress.

He stated that education is a crucial investment in human capital development, providing the necessary resources for economic growth. Odufuwa emphasized that education is essential for eliminating ignorance and developing the knowledge, skills, talents, and capacities of individuals.

Odufuwa stressed the need to properly impact the country’s people with knowledge, skills, and experience to enhance the human capacity of Nigeria. He warned that Nigeria would remain stagnant unless its human resources are adequately developed and utilized to harness non-human resources for consumption.

Congratulating the graduating students on their academic achievements, Odufuwa urged them to uphold ethical conduct in their future endeavors. He emphasized the importance of business ethics and integrity in Nigeria’s current environment, urging graduands to maintain discipline and embrace quality education.

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Odesanya, encouraged graduating students to become agents of impact in society. He highlighted that all academic programs at SWU are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and announced plans to establish new faculties and programs to enhance learning opportunities.

In his convocation lecture, Prof. Famous Izedonmi, Head of the Department of Accounting at the University of Benin and Chairman of the Governing Council of SWU, reiterated the crucial role of education in driving growth and development. He emphasized that educating the masses should be a top priority for leaders, as education is a powerful tool for meaningful change and revolution.

Izedonmi urged students and graduands to strive for excellence in all their endeavors and invest in knowledge to gain a competitive edge. The event highlighted SWU’s commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, and research, as well as its dedication to developing global leaders in various disciplines.
