Navigating Income Tax Refunds: Addressing Name Mismatch Issues for Smooth Processing

Title: Name Mismatch Between PAN and Bank Account Can Delay Income Tax Refunds, Even if ITR is Filed Successfully

In a recent development, it has been highlighted that income tax refunds are only issued to bank accounts that have been pre-validated. However, delays in receiving refunds can occur in cases where there is a mismatch between the name on the PAN card and the bank account details. This issue can arise even if the individual has successfully filed their Income Tax Return (ITR).

According to CA Pranjal Bansal, Partner at A A P T & Associates, individuals can still file their ITR even if there is a name mismatch between their PAN and bank account. However, this discrepancy can lead to delays in receiving the tax refund.

Refunds are typically issued to pre-validated bank accounts through the Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), where the name in the bank account is verified with the name on the PAN card. If there is a mismatch, the income tax department will not issue a tax refund to the individual.

Mihir Tanna, Associate Director-Direct tax at S.K Patodia & Associates LLP, shared a case where a client faced delays in receiving their tax refund due to a name mismatch between the PAN and bank records. The issue was resolved by updating the name in the PAN records and reapplying for the refund.

To address the name mismatch issue, individuals are advised to update their bank account details to match the name on their PAN card. This can be done by providing the necessary identification documents to the bank.

Under section 244A, individuals are eligible to receive interest on tax refund amounts. However, if the refund is delayed due to a name mismatch issue, there may be a loss of interest for the period in which the refund cannot be credited.

In cases where tax refunds are held back due to a name mismatch problem, individuals have two options – they can either correct the name in their PAN or update it in their bank account. It is recommended to make the name correction in the document that can be easily and quickly updated.

Overall, ensuring that the name on the PAN card matches the bank account details is crucial to avoid delays in receiving income tax refunds. Taking proactive steps to resolve any name mismatch issues can help individuals receive their refunds in a timely manner.
