Accountability and Transparency in Public Finance Management: Federal Government Urges Accountants-General to Uphold Standards

The federal government has issued a strong call to Accountants-General across Nigeria to prioritize accountability, credibility, and transparency in managing public finances. This directive was emphasized during the 2024 Capacity Building and Training Programme for Accountants-General held in Abuja.

The Accountant General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, stressed the importance of ensuring that public funds are utilized efficiently and effectively for their intended purposes. She highlighted the need for accountants to maintain high standards of professional conduct, consistency, and ethical behavior to build credibility in the accounting profession.

Dr. Madein also emphasized the critical role of transparency in promoting good governance, urging accountants to provide accessible, comprehensible, and timely financial information. She encouraged the adoption of new technologies such as integrated financial management systems and data analysis to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in financial management.

The retreat provided a platform for discussions on contemporary issues in public finance management, with the Chairman of the Forum of Accountants General, Umar B. Ahmed, underscoring the theme of the event. Ahmed emphasized the importance of embracing technology and modern practices to enhance financial reporting and tracking.

Overall, the government’s call for accountability, credibility, and transparency in public finance management highlights the commitment to upholding best practices and ensuring the responsible use of public funds for the benefit of all stakeholders.
