Former Ohio University Student Sentenced for Aggravated Theft and Fraud

ATHENS, OH—In a case that has captured the attention of the Athens community, Matthew Jeffrey Streeter, a 29-year-old former Ohio University student, has been sentenced to a five-year prison term following his conviction on charges of Aggravated Theft and Telecommunications Fraud. The sentencing, handed down by Judge Patrick J. Lang on July 17, 2024, in Athens County, marks the end of a legal battle that has highlighted the vulnerabilities organizations face in safeguarding their finances.

Streeter, who had been entrusted with the financial stewardship of the Delta Upsilon Alumni House Corporation as its volunteer treasurer starting in July 2018, was found to have executed 182 unauthorized transactions. These actions diverted a staggering $179,863.95 from the organization’s funds for his personal use, betraying the trust placed in him by the fraternity’s alumni and members.

The Athens County Prosecutor’s Office, with support from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Forensic Accounting Unit, led the prosecution. The state had pushed for the maximum sentence of 72 months, emphasizing the severity of Streeter’s actions and their impact on the Delta Upsilon Alumni House Corporation. Streeter, on the other hand, had sought leniency in the form of community control.

During the trial, the court heard victim impact statements that painted a vivid picture of the betrayal felt by those affected. Judge Lang, in deciding the sentence, took into account the gravity of the crimes and the need for restitution. In addition to the prison term, Streeter has been ordered to repay the embezzled funds, a directive that aims to provide some measure of relief to the victims of his fraudulent activities.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of oversight and accountability in financial management within organizations. The Delta Upsilon Alumni House Corporation, now faced with the task of rebuilding and moving forward, hopes that this conclusion will mark a new chapter in its history, one characterized by renewed vigilance and trust.

The sentencing of Matthew Jeffrey Streeter brings to a close a saga that has underscored the consequences of financial fraud and the justice system’s role in addressing such breaches of trust. As the community reflects on the implications of this case, the message is clear: integrity and accountability remain paramount in all forms of stewardship.
