Renowned Scholar Nimi Wariboko Appointed Director of African Studies Center
The Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies has announced the appointment of Dr. Nimi Wariboko as the new Director of Pardee’s African Studies Center (ASC), effective July 1st. Dr. Wariboko, the Walter G. Muelder Professor of Social Ethics at Boston University’s School of Theology, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role.
Dr. Wariboko is a renowned expert in world Christianity, social and economic ethics, and philosophy. His research focuses on social justice, poverty, and economic development within missionary-originated Churches, African Initiated Churches, and Pentecostal-Charismatic movements in Africa. With a background in economics, theology, philosophy, and literary studies, he is well-positioned to lead the ASC in its mission of fostering a deeper understanding of Africa across the BU community.
In addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Wariboko has real-world experience in the financial sector, having worked as a banker in Lagos and as a strategy consultant on Wall Street. His Ph.D. in Social Ethics from Princeton Theological Seminary and MBA in Finance and Accounting from Columbia University further enhance his ability to guide the academic direction of the ASC and explore new avenues for funding and collaboration.
Upon his appointment, Dr. Wariboko expressed his vision for the ASC, stating his goal to make it the greatest center of its kind in the country. He plans to create an intimate and engaging space for learning communities at BU that focus on Africa and Africans. He also aims to establish partnerships with academic and research institutions across Africa to further enhance the Center’s excellence and relevance within the BU community.
Dean Scott Taylor of the Pardee School praised Dr. Wariboko’s appointment, highlighting his intellectual pursuits and professional background as assets for leading the ASC into its next 75 years of excellence. Dr. Wariboko’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the ASC, following the recent celebration of its 75th anniversary.
With his expertise, experience, and vision, Dr. Wariboko is poised to continue leading the Center to greater heights, fostering engagement and understanding between the Pardee School, the greater Boston University community, and the African continent.
