ICAI’s New Curriculum Implementation and Technological Proficiency Focus
ICAI, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, has taken a proactive approach in redesigning its education and training scheme with the implementation of a new curriculum on July 1, 2023. The aim is to shape accounting professionals in technology and prepare them for the evolving landscape of the industry.
The new curriculum introduces four self-paced online modules aligned with technology-enabled learning as advocated by the National Education Policy, 2020. These modules cover subjects such as Risk Management, Sustainability Reporting, Forex and Treasury Management, and Digital Ecosystem and Controls, which are of global prominence.
One of the key highlights of the new CA curriculum is the emphasis on technological proficiency. The final level of the curriculum integrates Information Technology (IT) and ethics into core papers, providing comprehensive training modules in IT and Soft Skills. Students are exposed to a wide range of topics, including essential software applications, data analytics, accounting packages, forensic accounting, cyber security, and more.
The phased roll-out of the new curriculum ensures a smooth transition for existing students, with the inaugural exams scheduled to commence in May 2024 for Intermediate and Final levels and June 2024 for the Foundation level. The practical training offered includes a two-year examination-free period and mandatory training post-Intermediate level attainment, enhancing students’ real-world application skills.
Furthermore, ICAI has announced to conduct foundation and intermediate exams thrice a year, aligning with global practices to provide more opportunities for students to appear for the exams. This move is warmly welcomed by candidates, as it allows them to test sooner and pursue their dreams promptly.
Overall, the new curriculum represents a forward-thinking approach by ICAI to prepare accounting professionals for a tech-driven accounting landscape. By integrating technology into education, ICAI aims to produce graduates proficient in both traditional accounting and tech-driven innovation, enhancing efficiency in accounting practices.
