Accountant facing disciplinary tribunal for alleged misconduct and breach of ethics
The ongoing saga involving accountant Lieven took a new turn as the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants brought forth charges against her before its disciplinary tribunal. The charges stem from her conduct towards her tenant, which the PCC alleges brought discredit to the accounting profession.
According to the facts presented in a previous decision, Lieven, who was both the landlord and real estate agent of a property in Wellington, clashed with her tenant, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs staffer, over viewings of the property. The tenant requested 48 hours’ notice for viewings, but Lieven insisted that shorter notice was legal and necessary.
The situation escalated with Lieven threatening legal action against the tenant, including a lawsuit for any losses incurred. Despite the tenant issuing a trespass notice, the Saudi entourage, who were supposed to view the property, never did.
During the tribunal hearing, Lieven defended her actions, stating that her dispute with the tenant had no relation to her work as an accountant. She also accused the institute of obstructing justice and failing to conduct an independent investigation.
The charges against Lieven include misconduct in a professional capacity, conduct unbecoming of an accountant, and breaching the NZICA’s code of ethics. The tribunal will issue its findings in due course.
The case has garnered attention for its complex legal and ethical implications, highlighting the importance of professional conduct in the accounting profession. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
