The 2023 annual report from IESBA has been released

International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants Highlights Accomplishments and Outlines Agenda for 2023 in Annual Report

The International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) has had a groundbreaking year, as outlined in its recently released 2023 annual report. The standard-setter has made significant strides in enhancing global ethics standards and promoting integrity in corporate decision-making.

One of the key accomplishments of the past year was the approval and launch of several sustainability reporting standards aimed at combatting “greenwashing.” These standards include the Exposure Draft on International Ethics Standards for Sustainability Assurance and the final Ethics Standards for Tax Planning and Related Services.

IESBA Chair Gabriela Figueiredo Dias emphasized the board’s commitment to addressing evolving challenges and opportunities in the field of ethics. She stated, “Our efforts in areas such as sustainability reporting and assurance and tax planning are prime examples of how we are enhancing public trust and integrity in corporate reporting.”

Looking ahead to 2024, the IESBA’s agenda will focus on finalizing more sustainability-related standards, addressing accounting firm culture and governance, and considering independence considerations for audits of collective investment vehicles, pension funds, and investment company complexes.

Figueiredo Dias also highlighted the board’s plans to develop and finalize ethics standards for all sustainability assurance practitioners, demonstrating a commitment to expanding the impact of the Code beyond the profession. Additionally, the IESBA is working towards transitioning to a staff-driven model and expanding its team to ensure operational excellence and responsiveness to evolving needs.

Overall, the IESBA’s accomplishments and future agenda reflect a dedication to promoting ethical practices and integrity in the accounting profession, setting a high standard for global ethics standards.
