Reviewing President Scott Westheimer’s Year at The Florida Bar

President Scott Westheimer — The Bar year in review

President Scott Westheimer had a busy and eventful year as the head of the Florida Bar, with many accomplishments to highlight in his final address. From developing guidelines for the ethical use of generative AI to launching an automated trust accounting solution, Westheimer reflected on a successful year at the 2024 Annual Convention.

One of the major achievements during Westheimer’s tenure was the development and provision of effective and free trust accounting software through Nota. This software simplifies the trust account reconciliation process, integrates with members’ banks, and helps protect the public while ensuring Bar members stay in compliance with trust accounting rules.

Over 850 Florida law firms have already started using Nota since its rollout in late November, showcasing the impact and importance of this initiative. Westheimer credited the success of the software to the collaboration and hard work of board members, Bar auditors, and Bar Programs Division Director Terry Hill and Communications Director Jennifer Krell Davis.

In addition to the trust accounting software, Westheimer also focused on keeping pace with technological advancements in the legal field. He formed the “Special Committee on AI Resources & Tools” and the “Standing Committee on Cybersecurity and Privacy Law” to address the evolving landscape of legal technology and data security.

Westheimer’s dedication to enhancing communication and collaboration with voluntary bars across Florida was also evident in his efforts to eliminate rush or late fees for CLE accreditation and free CLE courses conducted by the Bar. By building stronger relationships with voluntary bars in each of Florida’s 20 judicial circuits, Westheimer aimed to create a more cohesive and supportive legal community.

As he prepares to pass the torch to incoming President Roland Sanchez-Medina, Jr., and President-elect Rosalyn Sia Baker-Barnes, Westheimer expressed confidence in their leadership abilities and dedication to taking the Florida Bar to new heights. With a successful year behind him, Westheimer thanked his colleagues, family, and supporters for their unwavering support and looked forward to returning home after a fulfilling term as President.
